Outremer catamarans, history

June 1984, La Grande Motte: Gérard Danson, young architect of the Conati shipyard, associated with the best technician on the site, Daniel Cailloux, embarked on the construction of a 40-foot, high-performance and marine catamaran, intended for offshore cruising. Designer and visionary creator, Gérard Danson understands that lightness, fine hulls and reduced wrap are the key elements guaranteeing the marine qualities of a multihull.

A second boat is started before the launch of the first: enthusiasm wins new companions who join the adventure... You have to find a name for this small structure, file statutes. Passionate about sea and travel, attached to the beautiful work, the partners agree on a name: Atelier Outermer is born!

Built to measure to adapt to the needs of their owners, open cockpit, small or large roofs, outboard or in-board engines, the first boats monopolize the podiums of the races in which they participate and quickly cross the oceans.

The challenge is successful: a new 50-foot model is designed to offer even more comfort and living space. New sheds make it possible to increase production capacities, the teams are expanding, a specialized design office is set up. The Outremer catamarans crisscrosses all the seas of the world, wins races and rallies: Transat des Alizés, Transat of enthusiasts, Transmed, Arc…

The first overseas 45, cars of the Orne, wins the prestigious Solo English deckchair in the hands of Didier Levillain. Many families discover that the catamaran can be a marine and safe boat for a sabbatical year around the Atlantic or for a world tour.

The disappearance of Gérard Danson in 2005 marks the end of a first era. But from 2007, a new start is given with the arrival of Grand Large Yachting! Seizing the complementarity around the great journey, attached to the fundamental values that have forged the DNA of Outremer, the GLY group is reviving production and is committed to the collaboration of the best multihull architects.

The Outremer 49 marks this revival: taking advantage of advances in technology (complete infusion of the structure) and evolutions of naval architecture (dynamic hull balances, single-storey spaces, 360° visibility, etc.), overseas yachting renews the concept of the great travel catamaran. While retaining the marine qualities that have built the legend of Overseas and bringing the expertise of a leading group of great voyage on all seas, in order to further improve the quality of life on board and the reliability of boats.

Attached to an extensive vision of customer service, large yachting and the millions of miles traveled on its boats guarantee an essential serenity in cruises.

Many awards attest to this progression: "Best European boat" for the Outremer 49, 5x, 4x, "Best boat of the year in the USA", BPI Excellence for innovation, Pass French Tech which rewards the most successful SMEs... The reputation of the construction site is spreading around the world, present in fifteen countries, exporting 70% of its production: the overseas have become the undisputed world reference of the great journey!
